It's remarkable how a Republican presidential candidate like Donald Trump can openly intimidate and insult a female candidate like Hilary Clinton, while a Democratic figure like Weinier is harshly punished for his relatively innocent indiscretions. As a Dutch boy, I will never fully understand this double standard in the States. Before seeing this documentary, I didn't really have a strong opinion about Anthony Weiner, but after seeing it, it's hard not to feel sympathy for the cursed politician and his attractive wife. It seems as if he is appreciated by the people it should be about: his supporters of middle-class voters. But for a documentary, the 'fly on the wall' registration is not really interesting. Cinematographically, it offers little more than the events as they unfold, but the contextualization also does not go beyond the consequences that the revelations in the media had on his political career and personal life.

Well, politics.

I had some trouble finding the focus during this documentary. Is it really about Weiner, or is it about the ridiculous form of politics that is being conducted. The first is what you get to see, the second is mainly my own interpretation, which took over as the documentary progressed.

Weiner is an easy target. A few good ideas will get you a long way, but politics is still a game where image is important and Weiner has completely failed to master that. In addition, he still comes across as calculated (at least, he tries to come across that way), which makes him less credible right away.

It's all separate from the circus that is being staged around him. Some of his personal life's dalliances are widely reported in the press, which ruins his political career. Completely at odds with the serious task that rests on the shoulders of such people, but that's the political media game.

Interesting to see, but I had the impression that the documentary itself was not really concerned with that. And that message is not particularly shocking or surprising of course. All that remains is a somewhat silly figure in the spotlight for 90 minutes.

2.0*

Anthony Weiner's passionate, unconventional approach to politics made him a popular congressman from 1999 to 2011, representing New York's 9th district. That was until a photo of his bulging underwear appeared on his public Twitter account. On June 21, 2011, Weiner resigned as a congressman. This documentary follows him and his wife Huma Abedin, a close associate of Hillary Clinton, during his political comeback in the run-up to the New York mayoral elections. In terms of personality, Weiner is certainly an interesting outsider, but the makers could not have foreseen what would happen during this campaign. Entertaining documentary sketches a contrast between the image that both the media and political opponents want to portray and the opinion of the average New Yorker and can retrospectively be seen as a harbinger of the political success of Donald Trump.
