Vessel plot
Doctor Rebecca Gomperts founded the organization Women on Waves in 1999 to help women who want to terminate their pregnancy, but are unable to do so legally. The organization literally circumvents the law: on international waters, the laws of the home country apply to a Dutch ship. So, as long as the vessel remains outside the territorial limits, abortion is allowed. Through archive footage and interviews, the documentary shows how the foundation was established and how the boat, converted into an abortion clinic, sets course for Ireland, Poland, Morocco and Portugal. Wherever the Women on Waves dock, a host of fierce adversaries await – Portugal even sends a military warship at them. At the same time, the phone is red hot and requests for help are pouring in. There is also the website Women on Web, which provides information on how to have an abortion yourself with medicines that are legally available almost everywhere in the world.
