The Staircase II: The Last Chance plot
Michael Peterson was suspected of murdering his wife Kathleen Peterson. He was sentenced to life in prison for first degree murder. Peterson appeals after serious doubts have arisen about the reliability of the statements of an expert witness. Eight years after his conviction, Michael Peterson has hopes of release. But while his sons and adoptive daughters are still loyal to him, his stepdaughter Caitlin has lost faith in his innocence. Besides the vicissitudes in the family, the film provides a picture of American justice, in which experts (self-proclaimed or not) play a crucial role in the interpretation of the evidence.
