The Secret Land plot
"One of the world's most daring adventures into the unknown!"
This documentary, filmed entirely by military photographers, chronicles the 1946-47 U.S. Navy expedition to Antarctica, known as Operation High Jump. The expedition was commanded by Admiral Richard E. Byrd, no stranger to Antarctica. This was a major undertaking, involving thirteen ships and over 4,000,000 men. The fleet set out from Norfolk, Virginia, and traveled through the Panama Canal and south to their final destination. The journey through the ice pack was fraught with danger, forcing the submarine that was part of the fleet to retreat. The voyage was a success and fulfilled all of its scientific objectives.
