The Inland Sea plot
In 1971, author and film scholar Donald Richie published a poetic travelogue about his explorations of the islands of the Inland Sea of Japan. In it he had recorded his search for traces of a traditional way of life, as well as his own journey of discovery. Twenty years later, filmmaker Lucille Carra undertook a similar journey to the area inspired by Richie's classic book. She captured images of hushed beauty and met people who still maintained the fading habits Richie had observed.
