The Heart Is a Drum plot

It starts with a sound recording from 1971. We hear the quiet bobbing of a rowing boat on the water. A man and a woman were in this boat, says the voice-over of musician Kim Gordon. Not much later, the woman would leave for Norway for good, while the man returned to Germany, becoming drummer and musician in such influential bands as Kraftwerk, Neu! and La Duesseldorf.
