The Deminer plot
In the chaotic aftermath of the fall of Saddam Hussein, Fakhir, a father of eight, is in the service of the Iraqi army. He sees landmines everywhere hitting innocent civilians and decides to dismantle them with his own hands, using a pocket knife and wire cutters. He clears thousands of roadside bombs, land mines and car bombs, knowing that every cut of a bomb wire could end his own life – which he seems to care less than the lives of others. Since 2014, Fakhir, now with one leg, has worked for the Kurdish Peshmerga and dismantled bombs that IS left behind as booby traps in and around Mosul.
