The Bleeding Edge plot

"What You Don't Know Can Hurt You"

This documentary examines how the multi-billion dollar profit-driven US medical technology industry exposes patients to risk on a daily basis. America has the most technologically advanced healthcare system in the world, but medical interventions have become the fourth leading cause of death. The vast majority of high-risk implanted devices never require a single clinical trial. In “The Bleeding Edge”, filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering take a look at the $400 billion medical device industry, which confronts patients with everyday risks through lax regulations and profit-seeking.

Surprise!

The FDA, the institute supposed to check medical devices for quality and safety, isn't that reliable! They are in the pocket of medical companies, which can still get their stuff into patients through backdoors. Big surprise and all that.

Instead of Dick getting to the bottom of this, he mainly visits patients who have experienced the negative consequences of these practices firsthand. So, many sad stories from people who came out of a procedure worse off.

It is a shame that Dick gets mostly lost in that, causing the message to be somewhat buried under an excess of sentimental drivel. As a result, the main question remains how big and how real the problem actually is, although there is little doubt about the unreliability of an agency like the FDA. Typical American documentary. Lots of whining, little substance.

1.5*

The consequences of an unregulated healthcare market become painfully clear in this shocking medical documentary. Much attention is focused on the scandal surrounding Essure, a contraceptive for women that left tens of thousands of women with permanent physical and psychological damage. Dick exposes the system that makes it possible to bring insufficiently or poorly tested so-called medical innovations to market. And in the US, legal structures exist through which manufacturers pay doctors to use their product. A true jaw-dropper, although it is somewhat reassuring to know that the European market is considerably better protected against quackery.
