Onder de Oppervlakte plot
In 2005, the Netherlands and Belgium signed a treaty on the deepening of the Western Scheldt, so that even the largest seagoing vessels can reach the port of Antwerp while nature is restored at the same time. Now, ten years and 32 reports later, the agreement on the Dutch side has still not been implemented. An unprecedentedly fierce battle of directions has arisen about this nature restoration, in which the Zeeland Hedwigepolder has come to play a central role. Ministers alternately spoke out for or against flooding the polder and even then Prime Minister Balkenende very emphatically determined the course. However, he had to back down when he was reprimanded by Europe and Belgium. Beneath the surface shows how one polder became the stake of a political game in which emotions and sentiment began to determine policy.
