Now we (of the NPO) must of course all think this is a bad film, but I have not been able to establish that. I did not hear any racist comments, nor was it Nazi glorification. Giving the German salute was apparently accepted by many countries and could not then be associated with the sequel known to us. If this film had been made in France or England, we would have gotten the same style and "wrong tone": nationalistic thinking (now, especially in Germany: sorry, not allowed!) was very common then.

A lot of attention for the sport and appreciation for the performance of all athletes back then (yes, also for Jesse Owens), skilfully and artistically portrayed.

Part one of Riefenstahl's coverage of the 1936 Summer Olympics. I expected a large amount of Nazi propaganda, but the film remains surprisingly neutral from beginning to end. The presence of the Führer and his followers is emphatic, but little or no discrimination or extremism can be detected. If there is one thing that is constantly put in the spotlight, it is the skills of the athletes themselves, regardless of their origin. Like 'Triumph of the Will', this movie is a joy to behold (from a movie lover's point of view). Lots of variation in camera angles, lots of reaction shots of the crowd and close-ups of the athletes, cameras that are almost always moving and slow motion galore. Every shot has clearly been thought through and it all comes into its own in this context. Some beautiful shots remain, for example the pole vault after sunset. I'm not a fan of sports in general, but that didn't make it any less interesting. The subcutaneous tension between the participating countries makes the images slightly more intense and meaningful.

I didn't really need the first part (did find it surprising that you got to see female nude there, by the way), but as soon as the focus really shifted to the Olympics, I really enjoyed it. Great use of close ups, top editing, those backgrounds where you hear hello hell hell and then USA USA USA and then again ... . Apart from that also just ideal to see on the one hand how far sport has evolved and on the other hand how good people often were back then, such an Owens ran 10.20 and jumped 8m06 far, that is just barely worse than the Belgian records in those disciplines now .

Unique time document, made by a professional who showed many visual innovations that are still influential today, in my opinion (I was not there, of course) gives a true picture of the atmosphere that existed between people at the time and of the way where sport was practiced at the highest level.

And as said, relatively neutral, yes Hitler comes into the picture, yes you will see a Nazi salute, but that was once the climate that prevailed in Germany and so much emphasis is not placed on those things.

Exceptionally strong. Would have gotten 5* for me without that early quarter, now 4.5*
