When she presented herself to the music world with her shaved head and the deeply personal, unconventional but widely acclaimed debut album 'The Lion and the Cobra', the idea quickly arose that she was out for controversy. And especially her infamous appearance on SNL caused a lot of commotion, something that became painfully clear when O'Connor appeared a year later at Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert. This documentary reveals how sincere and deep-rooted O'Connor's sense of justice was, and the price she paid for it. Thirty years after her public protest against the Catholic Church, she still appears to follow her own path and this documentary convincingly portrays her as a pioneer and a role model for the next generations of quirky, outspoken women in the music world.

Sinedje...

Documentary has a nice structure, ending with the incident during the Bob Dylan tribute concert in Madison Square Garden, 1992. Halfway through I thought 'now they must be quick, otherwise the film will soon be over', but now I understand So why did they take the time to do it.

It's not just about O'Connor's private life or the controversy, although it's nice to see how she becomes more and more activist as her popularity rises and increasingly kicks sacred cows with her army boots, fortunately people also focus on her music.

The songs are not broken off after 30 seconds, but last a nice long time; most of the attention goes to Troy, Mandinka and Nothing Compares 2 U, of course.. With the latter, however, it is mainly about the video clip, because the song itself was not allowed to be used by Prince's heirs, because they are a bit angry with Sineedje .. Anyway, he's used to it haha .. O'Connor explains in 4 words why that song, the clip and the famous tear touched people so much at the time: "It was a mirror."

"From whisper to scream in 3 seconds.." I also thought a nice description of O'Connor's singing voice.

No talking heads documentary, but mainly the voice of O'Connor himself, and old interviews conducted by elderly fossils who have to talk about O'Connor's hair over and over again.

Unfortunately, the documentary goes wrong at the end when another row of contemporary singers passes by: Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion (who the fuck?) (Billie Eilish excluded, by the way) with that again eternal cliché: 'Sinéad O'Connor paved the way for these artists', but it is precisely this superficial fake pop world that O'Connor is so opposed to.

In the village where I was born, there used to be a minister in the pulpit whom the pope described as 'the antichrist from Rome'. I think Sinaed O'Connor would have wholeheartedly agreed with him. Sinaed has been known as the difficult girl since her debut (beautiful record). Those who thought she was a bit weird or strange at the time, which I also belong to, should really check out this music documentary. It explains a lot about her behavior. Looking back at how the mostly American male presenters treat her is downright embarrassing. At one point one of them says to her: 'I also accept your bald head'.

When she ripped up the Pope's photo, she also destroyed her career. A shame, but it did produce beautiful images and in hindsight she was right. After all these years, I agree with our pastor for once.
