"The world reveals itself to those who travel on foot"

Werner Herzog turns the camera on himself and his decades-long friendship with the late writer Bruce Chatwin. The prolific author of “In Patagonia” was a big believer in nomadic life. He was also a soul mate whose quest for ecstatic truth took him to every corner of the globe. The two friends had a shared interest in the mysteries of life on Earth.

Thirty years after Bruce Chatwin passed away from AIDS, Werner Herzog paints a portrait of a good friend and kindred soul. Chatwin and Herzog shared an interest in anthropology, and Chatwin's stories and books about his travels were an important inspiration to Herzog. On the basis of six special places that they both (but not together) visited, he renews contact with the ghost of his old friend. A deeply personal portrait and tribute that was not made with the aim of reaching a wide audience. If you are a fan of the work of Chatwin and/or Herzog, or if you, like these men, enjoy traveling to special, remote places, then this is recommended. If not, you won't get much pleasure from this.

Herzog in a documentary in his signature style - in which he himself is the main character who searches for the memories of his buddy, Bruce Chatwin, and visits the places they have been - sometimes together, usually separately. In this way he puzzles together a portrait, gives an idea of who Chatwin was and how he lived. Very human and very sympathetic, on the other hand perhaps also somewhat incomplete and more intriguing than informative. Perhaps that is a positive thing, because it encourages you to look up one of Chatwin's books.
