Natchez plot
Natchez, Mississippi, once home to the second-largest slave market in the Deep South, boasted more millionaires than any other city in the country before the Civil War. Building opulent mansions became a competitive way to display wealth, resulting in the magnificent antebellum homes that still dot the city today. These homes have now been restored and carefully preserved, forming the foundation of a thriving tourist industry. Yet, the stories told in their grand halls often soften or omit the painful truths that made these homes possible.
