Natchez plot

Natchez, Mississippi, once home to the second-largest slave market in the Deep South, boasted more millionaires than any other city in the country before the Civil War. Building opulent mansions became a competitive way to display wealth, resulting in the magnificent antebellum homes that still dot the city today. These homes have now been restored and carefully preserved, forming the foundation of a thriving tourist industry. Yet, the stories told in their grand halls often soften or omit the painful truths that made these homes possible.

Natchez is a town of approximately 14,000 residents on the Mississippi River. The local Garden Club has kept the local economy afloat for generations by maintaining the stately 19th-century homes, opening them to the public, and offering tours. But Natchez's history is closely intertwined with slavery, as it was the site of the second-largest slave market in the country. In 2025, the town is divided between those who (want to) preserve the old, romantic image (think: Gone With The Wind) and those who highlight the darker underside of that history. Herbert filmed several tours, spoke with tour guides and residents, but limited himself to recording and left the judgment to the viewer. Fascinating and relevant, shocking and amusing, it's a sharp portrait of the divisions over national history that largely define contemporary American politics and social characteristics.
