Milan Kundera: From the Joke to Insignificance plot
"The only documentary about Milan Kundera's legacy"
The film adaptation of his novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being in 1988 made the Czech writer Milan Kundera world famous. The now 93-year-old author, who moved to France in 1975, has not been interviewed since 1985. Nevertheless, compatriot Miloslav Šmídmajer conceived the plan to make a documentary that should penetrate to the core of Kundera's writing through circumferential movements. One of those strategies is a frame story in which a young journalist is given the impossible task by his boss to seduce Kundera into an interview. In the end, Šmídmajer himself managed to win the trust of Kundera and his wife Vera.
