Les Plus Grands Peintres du Monde: André Derain plot

André Derain was one of the founders of Fauvism. The painter trained at the Camillo Academy from 1898 to 1899. In this academy he befriended Henri Matisse whom he met while copying paintings in the Louvre. He joined him in Collioure in 1905 and defined the style with which he became known to the general public: bright colours, simplified drawings, clear composition. After 1906 he seemed to be influenced by Gauguin and the primitive arts of Oceania, his colors became less vivid. Derain mainly made paintings, but he was also known as a sculptor.
