Le Concours plot
"Being good is never enough"
In The Graduation, Claire Simon documents the selection process at the famous Parisian film school La Fémis. Those who enter, follow in the footsteps of Louis Malle, François Ozon and Alain Resnais – all alumni of this prestigious institute. At the start of the comprehensive procedure, hundreds of students gather in a gigantic auditorium for the first assignment: a three-hour writing session. Ultimately, after three rounds, only a few percent are admitted and this strict selection leads to heated discussions among the many examiners, all experienced professionals from the film industry. Simon takes ample time to show the conversations and assessments, which discuss in detail the skills and character of the future French cinema elite. The candidates, often nervous and stumbling over their words, look vulnerable to the tried and tested older hands in the trade, who have the difficult task of filtering the real talent from all those eager young people.
