Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) is today regarded as one of the greatest German artists of the 20th century. She was adept at painting, drawing and sculpting. Her best-known works of art depicted the hardships faced by the German working class during the war years. Kollwitz was therefore an outspoken socialist and pacifist.
