Kings Ransom plot
"August 9th, 1988. The day Canada froze over"
On August 9, 1988, the NHL was changed forever with a stroke of the pen. The Edmonton Oilers, who had just registered their fourth Stanley Cup win in five years, signed a deal that sent Wayne Gretzky, a Canadian national hero and the greatest ice hockey player ever, to the Los Angeles Kings on a multimillion-dollar contract. The stunned Oilers fans struggled to make sense of the unthinkable and fans in Los Angeles rushed to buy season tickets. In this documentary, filmmaker Peter Berg shows the striking story of the transfer that shocked the entire country and made a city independent by a 27-year-old boy.
