Isaak Babel, de Verhalen plot
The Jewish-Russian writer Isaak Babel (1894-1940) immediately became known in 1925 with his collection of short stories Rode Ruiterij. In 1939 he became a victim of Stalin's purges. There is no trace of him until the secret service archives are opened in the 1990s and his death is a fact. Documentary maker Jack Janssen traced his three children and widow Anthonina Pirozhkova. Based on their story, about Babel as husband and father, a picture is sketched of a famous writer. The history of the family is interwoven with the image Babel created of himself in his literary work, supplemented with historical film material, including the feature film “The Meadow of Bezjin” by Sergei Eisenstein, based on a script by Babel.
