Hartenwens plot
In New Mexico, the Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) annually places 3,000 children in foster care who have been taken from their parents through neglect or violence. Babies and young children are often wanted as adopted children, but these children are less desirable due to their age and background. A method that is as unorthodox as it is effective has been found for this problem: the Hearts Gallery. The children are portrayed at their most beautiful by professional glamor photographers. These photos will be exhibited in places frequented by potential parents, such as the lobby of a hospital or other public building. It's a marketing ploy to sell a 'product' well, and… it works. Filmmaker Hans Heijnen attended various activities of this organization and met Derrick, Erika, Jannae and Eli who were adopted through the Hearts Gallery. They talk about their heartbreaking past and the problems surrounding their adoption. Heijnen films the children in their new family, where, through trial and error, they have regained a perspective on a positive future.
