Hannah Nydahl was born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark. At a young age she had a wild and idealistic way of life, influenced by the mentality of the time in the 60s. She soon took a great interest in spirituality and Buddhism. She and her husband Ole traveled to Nepal on their honeymoon, where they met a high cleric of Buddhism. They later became the first western students of the sixteenth karmapa and became key figures in the spread of Tibetan Buddhism in the western world.
