Grande Hotel plot
It was once a five-star hotel, with 110 generously sized rooms, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a luxurious restaurant. Designed like a wavy sugar cake, the Grande Hotel, located in Beira on the coast of Mozambique, symbolized the pride of colonialism in all its splendor. Today it is a gray ruin. More than 3,500 Mozambicans have found refuge between the wide corridors and imposing stairwells. Everything of value in the building has been demolished and sold; only the concrete carcass is still standing. Without water or electricity, the residents make the most of it. Small businesses thrive, but there is also violence and danger. Lotte Stoops portrayed some of the current residents of the Grande Hotel and visited a former guest in Portugal who still longs for her time in Mozambique.
