The Tom Cruise in Magnolia is literally the Tom this documentary shows. Mister indoctrination. A stroke of genius from Paul Thomas Anderson at the time. Tom, can you play for me that genius lunatic from the Church of Scientology and not deviate an inch from this "role". Or can you be him. Or play. I'm still not over it. Tom Cruise never seen better before and after. A genius madman.

Shocking, fascinating HBO documentary in which director Alex Gibney tries to penetrate the bizarre mindfuck called Scientology. However, the more you learn about it, the less the 'religion' is to understand. The disturbing and even frightening practices that take place behind the scenes are of course heavily discussed, as are figureheads John Travolta and Tom Cruise. Gibney works thoroughly and makes short work of his subject, without falling into cheap effect. He is clearly not Michael Moore. It's incomprehensible that such a scary and completely blown-out cult still exists and knows how to win souls.

The former Scientology supporters who tell their stories in this documentary are not the least. Some of the organization's key figures provide insights into L. Ron Hubbard's philosophy of how he—and since his death David Miscavige—use this recognized religion to evade taxes and accumulate vast wealth for himself. An Orwellian narration complemented by compelling archival material that makes clear how important John Travolta was and is highly critical of Tom Cruise's role in all of this. But above all, it provides insight into how it is possible for ordinary, intelligent people to get involved in a pseudo-religious cult and what prevents them from leaving it.
