In the natural beauty of tea plantations in Kenya, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, millions of tea workers struggle every day to survive. They pick the tea for multinationals such as Lipton and Finlay's. These companies pretend to consumers that they trade as responsible members of a global world with respect for the natural environment and concern for the living conditions of their workers. Nothing is less true. Western consumers buy Fairtrade because Fairtrade/Max Havelaar gives the assurance that the workers will receive extra money if the consumer buys their tea. But is that really so?
