Family Instinct plot
Zanda's brother Valdis is locked up for abuse and Zanda is left alone in a small house in the Latvian countryside. Her two children appear to be fathered by the same brother, with whom she has lived together all this time. The letters Valdis sends home bode ill for his return. "It's your fault," he writes. She should never have reported him. Without asking questions, the filmmaker records the raw life in the Latvian countryside during the absence of Valdis, the man of the house. Too much drink and lack of money are the cause of the constant quarrels between Zanda, her mother, her brother-in-law and her neighbour. The small children seem used to the screaming and fighting and play happily in the snow. The wait is for Valdis, because Zalda thinks: "I can't leave him." At the same time, she knows that custody of her children is in danger. She doubts: will her alcoholic neighbor be able to offer her a better life?
