In Agreste, an arid and poor area in the northeast of Brazil, lies the city of Toritama with its 40,000 inhabitants. About 20 million pairs of jeans are produced and finished here annually, making the city known as the 'Jeans Capital'. In addition to the gigantic textile factories, some residents of the city have set up so-called 'factions' in garages and backyards, where they work independently as small entrepreneurs.
