Dolce... plot
Dolce tells the story of Toshio Shimao, a well-known Japanese writer who died in 1986, his widow and their daughter. The documentary form is used as a framework to underline the deep understanding of the biographical narration. Video is used as an intimate way to penetrate the inner world of the characters. The dramatic events in the life of the Shimao family form the landscape that shows the essence of his reflections on Japan and the Japanese people. The storyline is a lyrical monologue by the heroine, Miho Shimao, the writer's wife, who lives with her disabled daughter on a desert island in the ocean, far away from all the unknown. The drama of self-examination into her personality turns out to be the most important occupation in this woman's life, a life in which actions mean much less than emotions. In impressionistic pen strokes, the filmmaker sketches the contours of a memory, the contrast of feelings, the nuances of the psyche, as in a lyrical piece of music, tender, dolce.
