De Donkere Kamer van Eli Weinberg plot
This documentary about South African photographer Eli Weinberg portrays a special period in South Africa's history, when a small group of white, predominantly Jewish idealists turned against the apartheid system in solidarity with the black population. One of them was Eli Weinberg (1908-1982), the ANC's 'court photographer' in the 1950s and 1960s. The film is largely set in Weinberg's former home in Johannesburg, where his darkroom and portrait studio were located. With contemporaries and relatives such as Nelson Mandela, judge Albie Sachs and daughter Sheila Weinberg, an attempt is made to revive the time of this radical political elite of Johannesburg. The reconstruction provides the image of a man who, because of his experiences with anti-Semitism and racial delusions in Eastern Europe, could not close his eyes to the daily reality in South Africa.
