In 1973, Claude Lanzmann began shooting Shoah, the nearly ten-hour film considered by many to be the most important Holocaust film ever made. The Frenchman worked for no less than twelve years on the documentary, which he made for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Lanzmann, however, was not indifferent to the realization of Shoah. He filmed 200 hours of footage in 14 different countries and spent five years editing it. The documentary, which he calls "a film about death, not about survival", exhausted him and almost robbed him of the will to continue living, he says in Specters of the Shoah. Lanzmann experienced the completion of Shoah as a death and it took a long time for him to recover. The almost 90-year-old filmmaker also talks about his close friendship with Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre and his time as a teenager in the French resistance during the Second World War. In addition to all this, never-before-seen material from his monumental documentary will also be on view.
