Cinema Futures plot
Will digital quality become the undisputed yardstick that determines the value of a film? Or do films on celluloid occupy a special position and people continue to appreciate film "as a specific form of life, as a medium and matter"? “Cinema Futures” explores both the unique qualities and the transience of film. Filmmakers and artists (Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, Tacita Dean) speak fondly of the specific properties of celluloid, while archivists show the immense work required to preserve the infinite miles of film. Is this a hopeless mission? Or should we simply accept, as Scorsese argues, that cinema always needs people who take care of the medium? An interplay of technology and economics decides the fate of the seventh art.
