“Real life is so much more interesting than the wildest imagination.” These are the words of Kevin MacDonald, one of the many documentary makers who interviewed filmmaker Pepita Ferrari about their profession as a documentary maker. What is a good documentary for them? How do you choose a topic – or does it choose you? How important is music for arousing emotions? Do you handle the camera yourself, do you come into the picture or do you go for fly-on-the-wall? Can film capture the real at all? Some filmmakers swear by the cinema vérité credo, others like Werner Herzog throw every kind of rule overboard and go for the “ecstasy of the truth”.
