Cabale à Kaboul plot

"Once upon a time...the last two Jews of Afghanistan." Although they have hated each other intensely for more than a decade, they share the courtyard of the old synagogue in Kabul where they each reside in a different part of the building. Old Isaac lives on the ground floor. He lives on the modest income generated by the sale of his kabbalistic amulets and other magical remedies to his Muslim neighbors. Enthroned on his upstairs balcony, the wealthy Zabulon, who looks older than his 50s, begs his clandestine wine to the same Afghans. The few words they exchange invariably lead to name-calling and insults. Why they hate each other remains very vague but apparently dates from the time of the Taliban who tolerated their presence.
