Bruk Out! A Dancehall Queen Documentary plot
Dancehall is a dance style that is often described as sexist, because women are said to be objectified. The documentary “Bruk Out! A Dancehall Queen Documentary” shows that this is a misunderstanding. One of the interviewees aptly compares the extravagant dancehall with punk rock: these women do what they want, feel free when they dance and express who they are through dance. This film follows a number of women – from Japan, Italy, America, Poland, Spain and of course Jamaica – as they prepare for the International Dancehall Queen competition in Jamaica, the birthplace of dancehall. For these women, dancehall is also a way to escape their background and pain, to be in another world for a while.
