Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes plot

In a recording studio, big names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, record an album with younger musicians, including Robert Glasper and Ambrose Akinmusire. They represent the old and young generation of the legendary record label Blue Note, which was founded in 1939. The recording of this album is the common thread in the film, which delves into the history of Blue Note. This is done, among other things, through the beautiful black-and-white photos that Francis Wolff one of the two founders of the American label from Germany − took during recording sessions. In addition, there is archive material of, for example, live performances and there are interviews with those involved, including sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder, musicians and fans. The well-known producer Don Was also speaks. He used to admire Blue Note from a distance and is the current director of the label.

Those looking for classic albums by the leading jazz musicians from 1939 onward will inevitably end up at Blue Note Records. In 2018, Blue Note, led by Don Was, is home to artists for whom the works of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Art Blakeley, among others, have been a great inspiration. This documentary traces the extraordinary history of Blue Note, founded by Jewish refugees Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff from Germany, who wanted to turn their love for the jazz they heard in Berlin in the 1930s into a non-profit record label. Blue Note turned out to be the place where black jazz musicians in particular felt respected and flourished. A fascinating story for the fans, with valuable contributions from Rudy Gelder, who was the resident sound engineer for some 60 years, and Michael Cuscana, the caretaker of a huge collection of photographs that Francis Wolff took during the recording sessions.
