Bardot plot

"Rebel with a cause"

Brigitte Bardot posed on the cover of Elle magazine at the age of fifteen and grew as an actress to sex symbol. She was the French answer to Marilyn Monroe and broke through in 1956 with her role in "Et Dieu... créa la femme" by Roger Vadim, her husband at the time. In the sixties she played in foreign films and made forays into the world of music. Bardot continued acting until 1973, after which she, as a pioneer in that field, became involved in activism, animal rights and ecology.

Four weeks before Brigitte Bardot passed away at 91, this tribute focused on Bardot's film career, her groundbreaking work as a woman on the big screen and in the male-dominated cinema, and her later role as an ambassador for the fight against animal cruelty. While the darker aspects of her later life are eschewed, this is a poignant reflection of Bardot's cultural influence, both on men and women, both at home and abroad.

The documentary balances between focusing on BB's cultural impact as a film and pop star and her second life as an animal rights activist. With an hour and a half remaining, some choices have been made. It's not an overview of her film career, although the first section specifically addresses two films: E Dieu Créa La Femme and La Vérité. It also explores her impact on fashion, trends, feminism, stardom, and the toll it took on her sexual freedom. There wasn't room to highlight every man in her life, so here too, we'll just focus on the "highlights"—which will suffice. The documentary also connects the fame that overtook her at a very young age with the committed choice she later made to advocate for animal rights and finally put her fame to good use.

The documentary reveals a woman with enormous spunk—and shaped by a strict bourgeois upbringing, no less. She also comes across as someone with a heart in the right place and a frank disposition. This latter point sometimes played a part in her later life, as she herself admitted she could be quite impulsive due to her love of animals. It's true that she faced several lawsuits for using racist language when discussing the tension between her beloved animal rights and certain cultural customs. This issue is also addressed in the documentary, where she explains and apologizes for her use of inappropriate language.

Brigitte Bardot is primarily remembered as a sex symbol, animal rights activist, and, more recently, an older woman who frequently made racist remarks. This last point is partly explained by her life, in which she was considered (and treated) almost like a product, and her preference for animals over people.

You'd almost forget she was also an actress. Along the same lines as similar peers Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe. In the eyes of most men around her, she was seen more as a conquest than a talented woman. There's so much to say about Bardot, it's hard to summarize in a single documentary. Because of this, it can be a bit of a mess and seems to omit many things. But you do get a broad picture of BB.
