Audrey plot

"More than an icon."

Malnutrition and lack of training during the occupation of the Netherlands in WWII shatter Audrey Hepburn's dream of becoming a ballet dancer. She decides to work as a show dancer in London where she breaks through with the lead role in the hit musical Gigi. Her Oscar-winning role as the free-spirited modern-day princess in Roman Holiday has made her loved the world over. But behind the stylish, confident top actress with the enchanting smile was an insecure woman with deep desires that she seemed unable to fulfill.

For those even remotely familiar with Audrey Hepburn's work, there's nothing new in this rather shallow ode to the actress who became a style icon and gave up long-standing Hollywood success to care for her children. The never-ending stream of accolades (just count how many times the word "icon" appears) from friends and colleagues underscores the one-sidedness of this portrait. However, Coan also spoke with Hepburn's children, and there are numerous audio clips in which Audrey herself talks about her professional and personal experiences. This lends the documentary some weight. Moreover, the footage is excellently selected, even though the last quarter is more of a promotional piece for UNICEF. The use of ballet dancers to depict a phase in Audrey's life was unwise.

A very nice documentary about a special actress and a special person.

You could see that as a hagiography, but perhaps it's also just right to document her in this way. If another actress can lay claim to a similarly exalted status, someone will surely be eager to make a similar documentary, and until then, we have this one. Perhaps there won't be much new information revealed for the true Audrey fan, but who cares? It's simply wonderful to see her talk about her life, her passion, her work.

And no, I really don't mind doing a promotion for Unicef either.

A beautiful and at times moving documentary about this woman who, as an actress, radiated simplicity but was above all a good person, a model of love, affection, and helpfulness.

Unforgettable on the silver screen in "Roman Holiday" and "My Fair Lady" and admirable as a UNICEF ambassador.
