Robert Altman (1925 - 2006) was a famous American director who was known for naturalistic films with an original perspective. He stated that he was more interested in characters than complicated storylines. Altman tended to outline just a basic plot for the film. He referred to the screenplay as a blueprint for the action and allowed his actors to improvise dialogue. This is the story of his life and work, based on many interviews with those who knew him.

Entertaining documentary about the life and work of director Robert Altman. A bit too broad in scope; almost all of his films are briefly discussed, but none of them are dwelt upon for long, which means that the whole remains rather superficial. Fortunately, there is also a lot of attention for the interesting early television career and the private life of Altman, something that provides some much-needed variety. We mainly see and hear Altman; actors and directors only appear briefly to give their interpretation of the term 'Altmanesque'.
