Al Pacino, le Bronx et la Fureur plot

A look at the life and work of Al Pacino, who made his breakthrough exactly fifty years ago as Michael Corleone in 'The Godfather' (1972). Director Francis Ford Coppola had his sights set on Pacino, then an unknown actor. He was alone in this, because the film studio and the producers as well as a large part of the cast saw nothing in Pacino, who was invariably addressed as 'dwarf' on set because of his short height.

Just read the Wikipedia page, and this documentary doesn't have much more to add. Film buffs familiar with Al Pacino's work will likely wait in vain for interesting revelations or new facts in this portrait of the acclaimed actor who initially embraced The Method, but from the 1980s onward adopted a different approach that certainly paid off. This documentary focuses on Pacino's early years but ignores much of his early work, focusing primarily on his 1970s triumphs: The Panic in Needle Park, The Godfather, Scarecrow, and Dog Day Afternoon. Scarface also makes an appearance, but apparently, the rest of his filmography wasn't worth the effort?!

Moderate.

A short, but therefore too fleeting, documentary about Al Pacino. In a few minutes, Pacino's youth is recounted with an old photo, followed by a dutiful review of his film career, in which, in my opinion, both the successes and setbacks are rather overstated. His initial period of success is due to the fact that he felt so deeply connected to the issues surrounding The Bronx; one flop later, he had apparently lost that connection again. At best, this short documentary is a cool way to see Pacino's filmography chronologically, but it doesn't offer much insight into the person behind the actor.

2.5
