A Comedian in a Syrian Tragedy plot

The political opinions of Fares Helou, one of Syria's best-known film and television actors, weigh heavily on the Assad regime. His joining the side of the pro-democracy protesters in 2011 was not without significance. To get him on the side of the government, the top officials of the dictatorial regime bombarded him first with ostentatious tribute, and second with veiled threats. Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, Helou leaves the country. But as soon as he settles down in Paris with his family, the pain of exile begins, manifesting itself in a daily, obsessive need to stay in touch with Syria and find a way to contribute.
