"THE SCREEN'S GREATEST EXCITEMENT OF THE YEAR!"
Physician Lieutenant Commander Clinton "Clint" Reed is in charge of the Public Health Service in New Orleans. Clint has a hard time saving New Orleans from a plague epidemic. This epidemic was brought into New Orleans by the illegal refugee Kochak, who came ashore via the ship the 'Nile Queen'. The ailing Kochak leaves the card game prematurely and he is followed by the violent criminal Blacky and his henchmen Raymond Fitch and Poldi. Kockak is murdered by Blacky and the coroner then determines that he has had the plague. Clint encounters resistance from skeptical police captain Tom Warren on his initiatives to prevent the spread of the plague. However, Clint gives Tom 48 hours to find Kochak's most likely infected killers and prevent further spread of the plague. Clint comes on the trail of the three criminals, of which in any case Poldi turns out to be infected with the plague.

Very entertaining story, told at a good pace.
I can't say that I was completely blown away by originality and the like, but it is just a nice thriller with Widmark and Zero Mostel (why is he so unknown?) in excellent roles.

Good film in which an immigrant with a contagious disease is murdered by a criminal. An original story, and certainly not a standard film noir (as far as you can call that a film). Towards the end it gets quite exciting. Good acting and especially the debuting Jack Palance stands out as the bad guy.

Nice movie where a public health official and a commissioner have to prevent the spread of an epidemic in New Orleans. A smoothly constructed film that is well dosed: some tension and crime, a bit of sentiment but not too much, a pinch of humor too... For Jack Palance this was his debut role after a boxing career... His psychopathic role as Blackie also means something to me I think of similar roles later played by Ray Liotta, an actor in whom I saw a lot of Palance, including a protruding chin. Widmark is also an actor I want to see more films of next year.
