Murder by an Aristocrat plot
Bayard Thatcher blackmails the various members of the family into which he is married. He asks for $25,000 for the next night and then he will leave them alone. Otherwise, he will tell about shady deals that relatives have made. But at midnight he is shot and Dr. Called Carick. He has Nurse Keating tend to Bayard's superficial wound and continue to watch over him. Later in the evening, a mysterious person steals the gun from under his pillow while he is arguing with someone. He is still alive in the morning and demands the money before nightfall, but he dies anyway. Sally Keating has only a few clues and a lot of questions to solve this case.
