Widmark, Fonda, and Guardino in a film-noir-esque police film directed by Don Siegel. I wasn't particularly impressed. Too many intertwined subplots, the least interesting of which are Madigan's sexually frustrated wife and the Black doctor. The script is far too cluttered with trivialities that contribute nothing to the overall effect. Fortunately, despite the shaky script, there are some excellent performances by some of the most influential film stars, almost all of whom have since passed away. It's great to see Fonda and Widmark on screen again;

Richard Widmark and Harry Guardino are two seasoned New York City cops who are given 72 hours by their commissioner [Henry Fonda] to capture a deadly criminal [Steve Ihnat] who has fled with their guns after a botched arrest.
A well-acted crime film in which the contrast between the driven Madigan [Widmark] and the apathetic-looking commissioner [Fonda] is particularly effective. The focus on the protagonist's personal life adds an extra dimension to this excellent crime film, making it stand out positively from the many similar crime films of the 1950s and early 1960s.

A good film about two officers who let a man escape during his arrest. A simple story for a fairly standard police film. However, it's more than solid overall and never falters. Well-developed characters, a great cast, and good location work.
