A provincial town is economically, socially and politically dominated by a family industrial enterprise whose patriarch is murdered. The notables, startled by anonymous letters, have a gay private detective come over from Paris whom they think they can easily manipulate. However, the community does not tolerate outsiders, so the research is greatly hindered.
