Humphrey Bogart may be big on this poster, but he plays a supporting role here as boxing promoter Nick Donati's [Edward G Robinson] ruthless, thoroughly corrupt competitor. Nick has been hoping for years for the ideal boxer 'who can go all the way', so that he can close good deals and earn big money, even if it is at the expense of the boxer himself. When a friendly, naive waiter [Wayne Morris] knocks a top boxer to the ground at a party for insulting Nick's girlfriend Louise [Bette Davis], he thinks he's found his man.

An excellent vehicle for Robinson that delivers craftsmanship. The (fully Italian spoken) kitchen scene where Nick surprises his mother [the charming Soledad Jiménez] is a gem. Bette Davis is a breath of fresh air as the extremely sympathetic, warm Louise. Bogart's role is quite thankless and the boxing scenes are a bit dated. Wayne Morris is also a bit colorless in the title, but to be honest that also fits the character he plays. This is not the ultimate boxing film, but fans of Robinson and especially Bette Davis will not want to miss this film!

Davis in her early years , but the show is stolen by the excellent performance of Robinson with a good role by Bogart .

I had already seen a number of films with Robinson but in this role he is very well on his way , the role of a boxing promoter seems to fit him like a glove , something I did not expect given his roles that are often timid and or intellectual types .
