The two above me are very positive, I'm not that positive, but it was a pretty decent B-movie.

Of course there are some clichés around the corner, but the smooth camera work and the fun action moments make it all quite enjoyable.

Only it could have been a bit shorter, the story was wafer-thin and could easily have been told in 90 minutes.

Still 3 stars for this funny B-movie.

Terrible movie.

I really don't understand where Fukasaku gets his reputation from. Stylistically it looks like a film student who didn't pay attention in class. Timing, flair and aesthetics are really zero, nothing, nada. The ridiculous swinging of the camera is worse than the fight scenes in Blade, the color filters are dull and passionless in use and the good man has apparently never heard of framing. There is hardly any music, but there is noise. A lot of noise. Just thrown here and there above the film.

The Yakuza story is dry and boring. It starts with praising Rikio as a very smart guy, after which you see him do the most idiotic and ridiculous things throughout the film.

0.5*, just below all arrow. Sad movie.

PS: I saw a 93 minute version, can't imagine it would stretch to 120+ minutes.

Lively but at the same time very messy crime film about Rikio Ishikawa, a young and brutal criminal who enters the yakuza world in Tokyo in 1946. Plot and characters are interesting enough, but the visual style used here quickly gets on your nerves. With the extremely jerky camerawork, director Kinji Fukasaku was certainly ahead of his time. But whether that is a recommendation...
