My first viewing of this movie, which in itself is quite bizarre because I've seen almost everything from Depp and the theme 'Jack the Ripper' definitely appeals to me. So in 2020, it might not be fair to judge this single now in its entirety. Thought he was çava, but certainly not wow, I liked the atmosphere, but the murders were quite normal to even poor and the search for the killer was rather obvious and it lacked the real punch as a whole. It was nice to hear Marilyn Manson with the nobodies at the end, which aroused some nostalgia

Depp-a-thon / Sjonniespectieve

Part two of the Sjonniespectieve. We can be brief about this one. From Hell is one of those titles whose cover would have beckoned me in the video store era, but I was never tempted. Now I understand why. The film is long-winded, overplotted and the actors don't give a damn. I found the gasping, hurried storytelling style where one tumbles from one 'Ninento presents: Grand Guignol' set piece after another, as it were, quite funny and charming, but at no time did I feel like I was really getting carried away in the laughable massacre. I kept a safe distance, in a place where ridicule and jeering reign supreme.

Hughes brothers at horror.

As a duo, they have always focused on presentation, especially in his later films. I can't judge what they've been up to for this specific film because I haven't seen it. In any case, I recognized their style from later films in it. A lot of focus on colors and atmosphere, and that certainly works very well during the horror scenes.

Depp does the most creditable. When I first heard about this movie I thought he was going to play the serial killer, but then he showed up as a cop. So there are no surprises in the world yet. In any case, he delivers a good performance and a role that is actually just a bit too boring for the world that the Hughes brothers want to portray. The same goes for the other characters.

What gets in the way of a film like this integral is all the nonsense that comes with it, such as love relationships and somewhat misplaced spectacle scenes. That's why I think the first hour is a bit stronger, in which there is still a focus on the murders themselves. Those are very ominous and atmospheric moments that movies like this make. It's also nice that they have followed the real murders a bit in terms of look. Look up the bodies of this case.

I liked the second half a lot less. It is already a disadvantage that the general environment does not interest me so much here, but the Hughes brothers handle it very nicely with beautiful decoration and a clever atmosphere. Sure, it's based on a comic book, but I'd rather it kept the mysterious tone of the first half. I don't care what Graham does in the meantime. I watched it for the serial killer.
