Smooth and simple.

Not much for tennis. Football is the sport that I actually watch in general, now also the World Cup more often than a new film. But I took this one because it seemed like a funny movie to me. Besides, I usually enjoy sports movies.

Dunst is cute and Bettany is quite fun as the Peter Colt who is going to play his senior year at Wimbledon and gets inspiration from Dunst. The chemistry is not really there and the humor is very flat and sometimes bland, but the film is nevertheless very smooth.

Images on the tennis court are nicely done and beautifully filmed. Visually, this film is perfectly fine, it looks sunny and simple. Quite a nice looker.

Those Wimbledon images are nice and the (slightly too long) final looks so nice, it's weird that the semifinal is played on some side court. It would have been nice to have more atmospheric images. As a romcom okay, especially because of the chemistry between Bettany and Dunst. As drama a little less, there is too little originality for that and the role of Sam Neill is not very interesting either. Other roles are okay, especially Favreau in such roles I always like. It's nice that Federer is mentioned even between nose and lips, that it's nice that a certain person in the film won, just like Hewitt. Federer had only just won Wimledon once, the heavier does such a comment feel now 16 years later. The film entertains but does not always captivate. 3.0*.

I suspect that anyone who starts this will know that a formula job awaits him or her. Wimbledon goes well by the book and you can therefore easily plan the course in advance. Personally I don't mind that much. After all, I like that formula from time to time and as long as it's accompanied by some funny jokes, I can't be bothered by it. Unfortunately, that last bit is disappointing in this film.

In fact, in the end the film appears to rely mainly on the tennis matches themselves, because in terms of humor I thought it was all very meager. James McAvoy and Jon Favreau make some nice attempts, but that's about it. The result is that the film is sometimes a bit boring and even drags. As mentioned, the tennis matches (which are well put together in terms of camera work and editing) ensured that I bounced back time and again. Paul Bettany did okay and I have a bit of a soft spot for Kirsten Dunst. The chemistry between the two was there, although the sudden coming together of the two at the end is not entirely believable (but as it should be of course). So ups and downs, but all in all certainly not bad to take in.

2.5*
