A writer named Algernon has just moved into a new apartment. He is persuaded by a merchant to buy a painting of a boat on a lake, although he does not like it at first. In time, Algernon becomes obsessed with it, to a disturbing degree: he can no longer write, eat or sleep. He tries to do something about this in various ways, so that he can function properly in life again.
