"They could risk their lives in the scam of the century or they could get real jobs. Tough choice."

They want to stop the thefts but want to do one more job for which they borrow money from a bigger villain. Unfortunately, they lose the money and have to go into hiding with family. The criminal is not happy that he does not see the money back and orders them to be killed.
