Jean Dubois d'Ombelles (Georges Pomiès), a young poet of wealthy descent, is drafted into military service at the same time as his servant Joseph Turlot (Michel Simon). Jospeh is in love with the maid, Georgette, and Jean is in love with his niece Solange. Jean and Joseph are both assigned to the same barracks.
